Workers at Enbridge Gas Storage and Transmission Operations (formerly Union Gas) went on strike early this morning across Southern Ontario. I worked for Union Gas for seventeen years before transitioning into academia. I was the crew leader at Lobo Compressor Station and a member of the Communication, Energy, and Paperworkers’ Union Local 999 executive (now Unifor 999) for several years (Vice-President and Chief Steward). I have mixed views of the strike, based on what I know of what led up to it, and I wish the crews at Lobo and the other STO stations well. It is an awfully tough time of year to strike against a gas utility that is highly automated and makes considerable use of contract labour. Enbridge is also led by very hard-nosed management.
