Jason Russell 2024 Final HeadshotWelcome to Working Life.  My name is Jason Russell.  I am a Professor of History and Labour Studies at Empire State College – State University of New York .  I have been working full-time in academia since 2010, but I was a part-time instructor for several years before joining Empire State College.  I also worked in the gas utility industry for seventeen years in unionized operations roles.  My Ph.D. is in History from York University in Toronto, Canada.

My current research focuses on labour and management in Canada from the 1940s to the 1990s.  I recently wrote an overview of representations of work and labor in America in the 1970s and 1980 titled Work and Labor in American Popular Culture: Representation in Film, Music and Television in the 1970s and 1980s that was published by Routledge.  I wrote introduction to conflict between labour and management in Canada and the United States in 2023 titled Management and Labor Conflict: An Introduction to the US and Canadian History that is part of the Routledge Focus series and was published in October 2022.  I wrote a popular history of work in Canada called Canada, A Working History that was published by Dundurn in March 2021.  My third book is called Leading Progress: the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, 1920 – 2020 and was published by Between the Lines in 2021.  My second book — Making Managers in Canada, 1945 – 1995: Companies, Community Colleges, and Universities — was published by Routledge in 2018.  My first book — Our Union: UAW/CAW Local 27 from 1950 to 1990 —  was published by Athabasca University Press in 2011.  I have an additional book under contract with University of Toronto Press that focuses on the social history of retirement in Canada.
